Sal Morales
Chef/Owner
Sal Morales, Owner and Chef of The Corner Kitchen, brings a lifetime of culinary passion, cultural influence, and community pride to every plate he serves. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Sal grew up surrounded by the aromas and traditions of home cooking. His earliest and most powerful inspirations came from watching both of his grandmothers in the kitchen—women who taught him the value of fresh ingredients, patience, and cooking from the heart.
In 1983, Sal moved with his mother, grandmother, and two siblings to San Francisco before settling in Concord in 1989. Concord has been home ever since, shaping not only his journey as a chef but also his commitment to giving back to the community that raised him.
Sal entered the restaurant world at a young age, driven by the need for a job and the comfort he always felt in the kitchen. Over the years, he worked his way up through Bay Area kitchens, eventually becoming Sous Chef at Bing Crosby’s, Head Chef at Maria Maria, and part of the opening culinary team at Rooftop in Walnut Creek. His deep knowledge of diverse cuisines and hands-on experience in high-energy kitchens shaped the chef he is today.
The idea for The Corner Kitchen came when business partners John and AJ presented Sal with a vision and business plan. As someone who grew up just down the street, opening a restaurant in Concord felt not only right—it felt personal. Despite early challenges like staffing issues and the impact of COVID, Sal and his partners stayed focused on their mission: serve high-quality food, give exceptional service, and build a place the community is proud of.
For Sal, The Corner Kitchen is more than a business—it’s a reflection of family, culture, and everything he loves about cooking. His mission is simple: become the best restaurant in Concord while supporting the neighborhood that has supported him for decades. What sets The Corner Kitchen apart is not just the menu—featuring sliders, wings, salads, and a growing selection of entrees and shareable plates made from fresh, scratch ingredients—but the sense of home and authenticity that guests feel when they walk through the doors.
A typical day for Sal starts early: opening the shop, guiding the team through their prep schedule, and prepping ingredients before cooking all day long. His leadership style is energetic, upbeat, and rooted in leading by example. With a deep knowledge of global flavors and dishes, Sal brings creativity and passion to every shift, inspiring his staff to grow and excel.
Being a local, family-owned business matters deeply to Sal. Having grown up in this neighborhood, he loves seeing longtime friends, familiar faces, and new customers discovering their favorite Corner Kitchen dishes. He wants everyone who walks in to feel excited and ready to eat—like they’re part of something personal.
Looking to the future, Sal is excited about the restaurant’s evolving direction, new menu ideas, and the possibility of expanding to more locations. His long-term goal is to grow the Corner Kitchen brand while staying true to the heart of the community.
When he isn’t at the restaurant—which is rare—you’ll find Sal cheering on the 49ers, Giants, and Warriors, spending time with family, or playing music. He enjoys harmonica, trumpet, and a variety of percussion instruments. And if you ask him about his favorite menu item? It’s the Blackened Chicken Slider—a spicy Creole flavor that reminds him of the tastes he grew up loving.
Sal Morales is more than a chef. He’s a creator, a community member, a mentor, and the driving force behind The Corner Kitchen’s past, present, and future.
